In just six months, I rose from top-performing salesperson to become the first female finance and sales manager in my company, eventually leading a sister store to record-breaking numbers. Before Jimmy and Deborah ever became part of the Elliott Group, Deborah had a rule: no buying anything at Solar Con. She had briefed Jimmy carefully before they walked through the doors. No leads. No software. No CRM upgrades. No branded gear.
Then Andy Elliott walked onto the stage.
“We sat through Andy’s presentation and I handed Jimmy the credit card and said, go buy whatever that man’s selling,” Deborah recalled with a laugh. “We walked into the booth holding our credit card. We had no idea what he was selling.”
What drew them in wasn’t a sales pitch. It was something harder to manufacture: discipline, culture, and leadership. As a former personal trainer, Deborah had seen enough people with good programs and bad follow-through. Seeing Andy’s entire team standing behind him, trained and focused, told her everything she needed to know about the man leading them.
“Most sales organizations at those events are drinking, going to strip clubs, showing up hungover,” she said. “When you’re in this organization, you don’t have to worry about that. It’s a safe place for women. It’s a safe place for your marriage.”
What followed wasn’t an instant rise. Jimmy and Deborah had been successful in multiple industries. They had money, toys, a boat, and the freedom to travel. They were used to being number one in their first month.
Solar sales humbled them.
“It was really different going from the top to the bottom,” Jimmy said. “I had to go from wearing heels to tennis shoes. It was very humbling to be the new guy.”
They stood at the marshmallow. They cleaned toilets. They ended months not at the top of the board. For a couple accustomed to winning, it was a jarring adjustment.
The turning point came when they stopped trying to sound like Andy Elliott and started sounding like themselves. They scrolled back through old photos, years of memories from across multiple industries, and asked themselves a simple question: why aren’t we being those people here?
“When I shifted and actually used our voice, that’s when we started growing a lot faster,” Jimmy said.
Their voice was specific. They weren’t chasing 20-year-olds. They were speaking to power couples, people building businesses while raising kids, navigating relationships, and chasing a big life. That was the world they knew. That was where their authenticity lived.

If there is one principle Jimmy and Deborah live by, it might be this: treat powerful people like people.
“The most important person in the room is most likely the most lonely,” Deborah explained. “That CEO has a couple of yes-men around him but no real friends. If you walk up without that starstruck fan energy and just talk to them, they’re genuinely appreciative.”
Their story about a white party in Malibu on the Fourth of July captures this perfectly. They were in the VIP room at Nobu, surrounded by celebrities, when Deborah noticed a girl standing just outside who looked like she needed a friend. She waved her in, they talked, they connected. It was only the next day that Deborah learned the girl was Kylie Jenner, whose boyfriend was DJing the event.
She hadn’t known. She hadn’t cared. She just saw someone who needed to feel included.
This instinct has been the engine behind 16 years of referrals, relationships, and opportunities that no marketing strategy could have manufactured.
“All of our job opportunities, all of our travels, all of our referrals, everything is because of people,” Jimmy said.
When asked what they want to be known for, Jimmy’s answer was quiet and deliberate.
“Consistency. I want to always be consistent. With our revenue, with our relationship, just moving in the right direction. Progress and growth. Not always trying to shoot up, just consistently moving forward.”
This philosophy extends to their marriage, which has been the constant thread running through every industry, every move, every leap off a new cliff. They have been together through California, solar sales, a mobile lifestyle, and now the Elliott Group. Jimmy calls Deborah his best friend. She calls him 10 times better at connecting with people than she is, which is saying something given her own gift for relationships.
“Things always happen to you,” Deborah said. “If you focus on the past or things that have happened to you, you can destroy yourself. It’s not about what happens to you. It’s about how you roll through it and how you recover.”
She calls it being a duck. Oily. Water rolling off the back. And underneath that image is something deeper: the belief that hard things are not interruptions to the plan. They are part of it.

For anyone on the edge of a decision, whether it is getting into sales, starting a business, or joining something new and uncertain, Jimmy’s advice cuts straight to the point.
“You’re actually going to have to suck before you get good. People are so fearful to take that first step. The first step is just having faith, finding a mentor, and being bold about it.”
He and Deborah left their comfort zone, moved to California, and walked into an industry they knew nothing about. That leap opened Napa, Lake Tahoe, new friendships, new income, and eventually a stage at Solar Con where a woman handed her husband a credit card and said go buy whatever that man’s selling.
None of it happens without the first terrifying step.
