If People Do This, You’re Being Manipulated!

July 13, 20265 min read

There are conversations that stay with you long after the recording stops, and my talk with Coach Randy White is one of them. Randy has spent over four decades reinventing himself, and by his own account, he has done it through four major collapses and rebuilds. What struck me most wasn’t just his story; it was the language he has developed to explain why we all get stuck in patterns we swore we would never repeat.

RANDY WHITE

The Discard That Changed Everything

Randy’s healing didn’t happen gradually. It happened almost overnight, sparked by what he calls his ninth and final discard in a narcissistic relationship back in 2023. After the breakup, his social media feed filled with content describing narcissistic abuse patterns, and something clicked. He told me it felt like someone had rubbed mud in his eyes, and suddenly he could see. Forty years of experience, starting with a primary caregiver when he was just nine years old, finally made sense.

What fascinated me was how he didn’t just apply this awareness externally. He turned it inward too, examining his own responses, his own conditioning, and the identity he had built to survive.

Two Identities, One Body

One of the biggest lightbulb moments in our conversation was Randy’s breakdown of conditioned identity versus aspirational identity. Your aspirational identity is who you want to be, the entrepreneur, the leader, the creator. Your conditioned identity is who actually shows up when pressure hits. As Randy put it, character isn’t built under pressure; it’s revealed under pressure. Whichever identity has the most practice is the one that takes over.

This reframed something I have struggled with personally. I shared with Randy that I consider myself a people pleaser, and he gently pushed back on that label. He explained that people pleasing isn’t a personality trait; it’s a nervous system trained to sacrifice yourself in order to maintain connection and avoid perceived rejection. Once you understand that, you can actually start to reverse-engineer it.

Understanding the Nervous System

Randy walked me through the difference between the autonomic nervous system and the central nervous system, and how, under intense stress, logic and survival instincts stop communicating. The body defaults to whatever it has always done, whether that is fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Leaders who fight tend to micromanage. Leaders who freeze struggle to make decisions. Leaders who fawn avoid hard conversations altogether.

He also explained the biochemical rollercoaster that keeps people trapped in toxic relationships. Early on, the body floods with oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. Then, when things turn toxic, cortisol takes over. The extreme highs and lows create a chemical addiction, and the mind starts associating the person causing the pain with the relief that follows it. It is not weakness, it is conditioning.

The Core 4 Framework

Randy credits a framework called Core 4, body, mind, relationship, and purpose, as the structure that helps him stay grounded while coaching others through their lowest points. He practices sympathy over empathy, meaning he can understand where someone is without absorbing their pain. Every morning starts with movement, hydration, meditation, and journaling before he ever takes on anyone else’s needs. As he told me, you cannot pour into others if your own cup is empty.

Faith, Family, and Mentorship

Randy opened up about his faith, which has been part of his life since he received a Bible at age nine that told him he was a powerful son of God meant for something significant. He has been baptized three times throughout his life, each one marking a different chapter. He is also a father to two grown sons and recently became a grandfather, something he spoke about with real joy.

We also talked at length about mentorship. Randy shared how he got his first mentor at 23 after getting into the mortgage industry, eventually building his own mortgage business by 27, only to lose it all when the industry collapsed around 2008. That experience reinforced something he still believes deeply: that mentorship shortens the learning curve and helps you avoid mistakes others have already made. He compared it to choosing a pilot for a flight. Would you rather fly with someone who has a thousand hours of classroom study or someone who has a thousand hours of actual flight time? The answer is obvious.

What Comes Next

Randy is preparing to release his first book this September and is working on turning his coaching brand into a larger institutionalized platform. He is also planning his first in-person event in the Phoenix area, wanting to build a physical community alongside his virtual one.

We ended our conversation talking about the growing role of AI and what it means for people who find their sense of purpose through work. Randy believes that as AI displaces jobs, more people will be searching for identity and meaning outside of their careers, and that community will become more essential than ever.

Final Thoughts

Regulating your nervous system does not mean never feeling activated, it means learning to stay present and lead yourself through it instead of reacting on autopilot. If you have ever felt like you keep hitting the same ceiling or falling into the same patterns, this episode offers a real roadmap for understanding why, and more importantly, what to do about it.

You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall back to the level of your identity. Randy’s story is proof that identity can be rebuilt, no matter how many times you have to start over.
